Abstract

Hydatid cyst is an endemic and zoonotic disease in certain areas of the world. Surgery is the treatment of choice. Many scolicidal agents have been used for inactivation of protoscoleces during surgery, but they are associated with adverse side effects. In the present study, the scolicidal effect of 0.5 ml of Citrus limon eureka juice was investigated. Protoscoleces were collected aseptically from sheep hydatid cyst. 0.5 mL of Citrus limon eureka juice was used for 5, 10, and 15 min in the experiments. 0.1% eosin staining assessed viability of protoscoleces. All tests were carried in triplicate. The scolicidal activity of 0.5 ml of Citrus limon eureka was ranged between 91.15% and 99.46% after 5 min of application. However, 0.5 ml of Citrus limon eureka killed 100% of protoscoleces afer 10 min and 15 min of application. Citrus limon eureka juice had a high scolicidal activity in vitro and thus might be used as a scolicidal agent in the surgical treatment of the hydatid cyst. Further efficiency in vivo and sides’ effects studies are needed.
