Abstract

THE EFFECT OF CATTLE BREEDING UPON THE ENVIRONMENT

Humans and animals alike contribute to the pollution of the environment. Wastes like manure and the emission of gases cause pollution in water, soil, air and the general environment.
Cattle production has some aspects related to environmental issues. Humans and animals contribute to the pollution of air by releasing into the atmosphere huge amounts of carbon dioxide, methane, chlorofluorocarbons, nitrous oxides and other gases.
When organic matter from livestock waste is decomposed in a stream, oxygen can be depleted causing aquatic life to suffocate. Livestock waste also contains bacteria, which may render water unsuitable for consumption or recreational purposes. The biodegradation of manure forms gases, such as methane (CH4), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), ammonia (NH3), and carbon dioxide (CO2), which can be fatal to both animals and humans.
