Abstract

Ethanol derived from woody biomass has the potential to be a renewable transportation fuel than can replace gasoline. The paper presents the bioconversion of woody biomass to ethanol, pretreatment of the material prior to acid hydrolysis is important to obtain high overall yield of sugar and ethanol. In this study, steam explosion pretreatment, two step hydrolysis process and fermentation has been investigated.
