A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW REGARDING THE BOTANICAL ORIGIN, MEDICINAL USES AND CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF ROMAN AND GERMAN CHAMOMILE

Abstract


Chamomile plant it is considered an amazing medicinal one, being the most widely used in all over the world. Due to its pleasant taste and its calming, sedative, therapeutically and medicinal effects, this plant is used in different industries. The chemical composition of chamomile is rich in total phenols, organic acids, terpenes, flavonoids, fatty acids, tocopherols, carotenoids and volatile compounds. The main product manufactured from chamomile is essential oil, recognized thanks to its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, fungicidal, vermifuge, aromatherapy and antioxidant properties. Roman and German chamomile are the most common species from Asteraceae family being used in the production of tea, essential oils, products with medicinal and pharmaceutical uses and food industry.
