CONSIDERATIONS ON THE MAIN ECONOMIC INDICES OF THE TIMIS COUNTY

Abstract

In order to characterise the economic development stage of Romania, we should analyse an
ensemble of macro-economic indices that speak about condition, potential and economic level, economic
structure, efficiency of production factors, degree of international competitiveness, and living standard.
In a poor economic environment that is also unevenly structured and reformed – such as the one of Romania
during the transition period – efforts to re-launch economic growth and modernise economic structure, branches,
and products led to zigzag evolutions, to the need for recovering macro-economic unbalance, to keep inflation
under control, to make the population believe in the national currency, to diminish structural deficits, including
consolidated budget deficit.
Discrepancies within the mix of economic policies, early relaxation of restrictions otherwise necessary,
associated with lacks of legal, institutional, and behavioural functioning, and market malfunction resulted in
negative effects.
