Waste as Alternative Energy Source

Abstract


Urban waste stored in warehouses may represent an energy source. Under bacteria action, organic compounds in waste suffer an anaerobic reduction, resulting in a significant quantity of biogas that contains in average over 50% of methane gas with a substantial caloric power. These gases may be captured by a pipe network, filtered and dried or liquefied, and may represent the fuel for internal combustion engine actuate a power generator. Thus, electrical energy can be produced from waste – a clean and easy way to transport energy. All urban waste warehouses from Romania may become energy producers. The advantages are significant as unusable waste is used to obtain energy and to capture biogas, whose greenhouse effect is much more powerful than the carbon dioxide.
