Abstract

Turcana breed sheep account for more than 65% of the entire sheep population bred in Romania. Although wool price is very low, wool production and its characteristics still remain breed defining traits. The purpose of our study was to determine the wool production characteristics in a white variety sheep population belonging to the Turcana breed. This ecotype, called Bala de Bistrita, is considered to be one of the most valuable within the breed. To asses wool characteristics we’ve used the standard A.N.A.R.Z. methodology. A number of 6 rams and 196 ewes with ages between 2 and 6 years old were taken into account. The values for the six traits observed are summarized in Tab. 1.
