Abstract

The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of progestagen duration treatments combined with equine chorionic gonadotrophin and prostaglandin F2α injection on estrus synchronization and reproductive performance in early anestrus. Healthy non lactating Ouled Djellal ewes (n = 120) were randomly divided into four groups. In three groups, one of the following progestagen treatments was inserted for 6 days: CIDR (controlled internal drug releasing: CePG-ST1), medroxyprogesterone acetate (MePG-ST2), or fluorgestone acetate (FePG-ST3). Also, FePG-LT group received fluorgestone acetate for 14 days. Estrus response and reproductive performance were comparable in short-term treatement groups. Compared to the other short-term protocols, onest of estrus was significantly earlier (p<0,05) in FePG-ST3 group, and estrus duration was significantly longer (p<0, 05). There was no significant difference between the tow duration treatments (short-term, long-term) in estrus response, onset and duration of estrus. However, compared to short-term group, the mean fecundity and prolificacy in long-term group were significantly higher (p<0,05). The short-term treatment in early anestrus season induced an efficient estrus response without a reduction in reproductive performance, but the long-term treatment provided higher fecundity and prolificacy than short-term treatment.
