Abstract

Considering the importance of natural brushes grown from seed from the point of view of productivity and ecologic balance, more and more emphasis has been laid lately on applying intensive treatment based on natural regeneration of the brush. According to current instructions, the regeneration percentage after cutting has to be over 70%. This cannot be achieved in all situations because of the existence of a congregate of various factors that influence both the fructification process and the process of new seed starting. In almost each situation, the process of natural regeneration is completed with the artificial introduction of forest saplings, so as to achieve the established regeneration composition (according to the currently valid instructions). In order to establish the behavior of the saplings produced in nurseries as compared to those produced through natural regeneration, determinations have been made with a view to study vertical growth in these two categories of saplings. Direct measurements of the annual vertical growth have been made, both on those saplings produced naturally and on those produced in nurseries, situated at the basis, in the middle and on the upstream of the mountainside from the forestry unit 62, within the Forestry Department Turda. These were carried out in August 2006, in 9 trial areas of 30 sqm each.
